Adequate fire prevention? Design Construction Specialists Project Management Extensions New Builds Barn Conversion

One of the most important aspects of fire safety in any setting, is prevention, which includes being alert and vigilant, using common sense and reporting any potential problems. Fire prevention means depriving fire of its fuel, as well as keeping fuel and ignition sources separate. Poor housekeeping is often a cause of fire, not only by providing the material to fuel the fire, but by blocking exits and equipment such as fire extinguishers. Here are some prevention pointers:-

  • A neat environment free of things like waste paper is a good idea along with keeping storage areas tidy.
  • Check electrical leads frequently for any signs of damage or wear and tear, and do not use any faulty electrical items.
  • You should have all electrical equipment PAT tested on a regular basis to ensure that it does not present a fire hazard.
  • Don’t overload plug sockets nor use several extension leads plugged into each other for extra length.
  • Make sure that electrical equipment which is likely to warm up in use, such as laptop power supplies are not covered.
  • Use your nose, if you can smell burning or any other strange smells when using equipment discontinue use and have the item looked at.
  • Make sure emergency corridors and exits are always clear in case of fire.
  • Where fire extinguishers are in place, check that the appropriate staff know where they are and how to operate them if need be.
  • Prevent the chance of an arson attack by ensuring there is no combustible waste lying around outside.

People tend to think they won’t be affected by a fire, but prevention is always the best course of action. In recent years the impressive advantages of sprinkler systems have been demonstrated time and again. They provide an immediate alert, and also reduce fire and smoke, allowing valuable time for escape or rescue.
