Occasionally, a council may earmark local properties as potential homes for people who already reside or run a business in the area. In this case a potential buyer might be required to sign an agreement stating that they intend to remain in the area for a specified time. These grants are however means tested, and do come with quite strict limitations, including the property being older than ten years and not a second holiday home. Also, if the person requesting the grant is an owner occupier, they must not have occupied the home for at least three years before the first application is made. Grants of up to £20,00 are available, and conditions are also imposed which have to be adhered to by an owner occupier for ten years after receipt. If these conditions are breached, or the property is sold within the condition period, the money will need to be paid back to the local authority.
Renovations needed to improve a property, render it fit to live in, and elevate it to the Decent Homes standard could qualify.
